Hair Club for Geldings

Yep, I finally took the plunge, grabbed the clippers, and gave Salem the horse neck equivalent of a Brazilian.   :-) I roached that mane down to the root!

I have to admit that I'm not a fan of the completely-shorn look. Yes, I love not having to deal with that one giant lock that flips to the left side of his neck no.matter.what, but I'm quite anxious for his spike to grown in. Right now, he looks like either a military cadet fresh out of boot camp or a bald old man with a single shock of hair in front. Either way, it's bad.

Hopefully, in a few weeks he'll be rockin' a 'hawk. If it looks anything like this, my little heart will melt:

Love a punk rocker Fjord pony with a mile-high mohawk! Too cute.

Think spiky thoughts!

Don't worry, it will grow out before you know it and he'll be a proud new member of the totally awesome mohawk gang!

Now I will need some 'hawk maintenance lessons. Do you clip it? Cut it? Step-by-step instructions would be great, as I am hair-challenged. It took me over 20 years to figure out how to tame my own Mufasa mane.

If you want a Fjord hair cut you want to cut it so that it is higher in the middle of the neck and tapers down at the ends, then go back and cut the tan down about an inch on both sides.

Ya, another Roach lover. I LOVED Laz's last summer..I just let it grow out but it didn't do that awesome hump like your Fjord pictures (btw I met one in person last week and scrumpdiddliumpitous!!)
Give it a couple (few maybe Edward scissorhands) and it will grow out to a nice length. Once I roached him down, in early July, it grew SLOWLY so he rocked it until late Oct. Took a while to grow which was nice. Salem looks great :)

ALSO..did you contemplate taking off his bangs too? I didn't either, but was SOOOOOO tempted. Especially being Laz's are like an 80's Sun-In lover teenagers.

I love it! Looks so sleek, I look forward to the future mohawk pics :)

JPS, oh goodness, I guess Salem will not be sporting a Fjord-hawk! I'm not so talented in the hair maintenance department.
Kristen, lol, no I didn't think about sutting the forelock off because I really hate the look of little-to-no-forelock. I know a few horses who have, like, 3 little tiny forelock hairs. Laz has gorgeous streaked surfer boy Fraggle Rock bangs, don't cut 'em!
Laura, I am SO looking forward to the 'hawk!

I'm not a fan of bald ponies either! I'm always coveting a long thick mane and forelock - but never seem to achieve it! I love that shot of the pony though, too cute.
